Top drought or obsolete summit drought is a disease of old trees. Symptoms are the death of the upper branches while the lower ones continue to vegetate. It is the beginning of death caused by old age and the influence of external forces. In addition, treetop drought occurs when there is unfavorable nutritional conditions, especially when there is a lack of water, lightning strikes or damage to the roots by fungi or animals. In the case of pines as a result of the disease of the knees , in the case of old oaks , if they are released from the closed position as overhangers .

Today, tree-top drought is one of the safety reasons for which trees are officially felled.
