Wirad von Boizenburg was around 1188 the agent of Count Adolf III. from Schauenburg . According to the name and tradition, he was of Slavic origin. At that time, the area around was Boizenburg from the tribe of polabians (the "on the Elbe") inhabited.

In Hamburg he organized the construction of the so-called "old" Neustadt around the Nikolaikirche . He induced colonists from Holland, Friesland and Westphalia to settle the new city according to Lübeck city law . The market place was the hop market at the Nikolaikirche. According to the Count's will, this “Neustadt” was supposed to be a trading colony, to which the first port of Hamburg was built in the Alster arm, now called Nikolaifleet. Wirad is said to have been one of the city councilors.

The council notary Jordan von Boizenburg , who may have been his grandson, was part of his family .

Today the "old" Neustadt belongs to the Hamburg district of Hamburg-Altstadt and includes the former parish of St. Nikolai.
