The Château de Wittschloessel (French Château de Château de Wittschloessel ) is an Outbound small medieval rock castle on a small rock in 444 meters at the summit south of the Witt Mountain Obersteinbach in the field of Dambach in Alsace .

description

Very little of the Wittschlössel has survived. Only a few remains of the wall and a room carved out of the rock (without a ceiling) still bear witness to the existence of a castle. Large parts of the facility are covered with rubble several meters high.

It is possible that the Wittschlössel belonged to the Burg Wineck located on the same mountain ridge or the nearby Castle Schöneck .

history

Nothing is known about the founding of the castle. The careful stone processing suggests that it was built in the 13th century. The castle was first mentioned in 1577 as Wydberg Schlolsslin . In this document the castle is described as already abandoned. The iron manufacturer Jean de Dietrich bought the forest area including the castle in the 18th century. The castle site was still of interest as a military observation post, for example in 1814 for French soldiers from Bitsch under General Baron von Maureillan and in World War II for the French soldiers who fought a gun battle with German troops at the castle site on June 12, 1940.
