Wineck Castle

The Burg Wineck (French Château de Wineck ), also called Windeck , is the ruin of a small medieval hilltop castle above the Winecker valley near Dambach in Alsace and belongs to the rock castle type .

history

According to archaeological findings, the castle was built in the 13th century. The castle is first mentioned in 1338 as Hauß Windecken owned by the knight Johann Marsilius von Saarbrücken. In 1517 Wolf Eckbrecht von Dürckheim received the castle together with Schöneck Castle .

The castle was probably destroyed together with Schöneck Castle in 1680.

Since December 30, 1985 it has been under monument protection as Monument historique .

description

The ruins of Burg Wineck are 368 meters above sea level. There are only a few remains of the wall of the lower castle on the east side of the rock. The upper castle is freely accessible and can only be reached with climbing gear. The castle was released for climbing, but with consideration for the archaeological relics. A rock space and remains of the tower and the shield wall have been preserved on the upper castle .

Wineck Castle may have belonged to Wittschlössel Castle on the same ridge .
