Wizard of Wor is an arcade game released by Bally Midway in 1981 . The action game for two players was later ported very successfully to the Commodore 64 .
Game flow
The aim of the game is to kill all the monsters that appear in successive levels ( dungeons ). The players see the dungeon completely from above and recognize all monsters, even if they are not in a direct line of sight due to walls. Players instantly lose a life as soon as they walk into a monster's beam of fire or let the monster touch them. The longer it takes players to kill the monsters, the faster the latter move through the dungeon, which increases the difficulty.
A special feature of the game is that the players can decide at any point during the game whether to play against or with each other: Although there are points for killing the other player as well as for killing monsters, the game makes it more difficult, as well-organized team play such as crossfire and good tactical positioning can often make it easier to dominate the playing field.
There are five different types of monsters that move through the dungeon at different speeds and some have special abilities. In addition to the standard monsters Burwor , Garwor and Thorwor, there are two more monsters in later levels: The Worluk moves extremely quickly and always tries to escape the labyrinth through one of the two side exits . If the players succeed in preventing this, all kills in the next level count twice ( Double Score Dungeon ). Once the Worluk has been dealt with, the final boss Wizard of Wor appears in some levels , who can teleport anywhere on the field, making it difficult to kill.
Others
The minimal electro music group Welle: Erdball released a song on their album Chaos Total in 2006 with the title Wizard of Wor , in which the melody or the sound of the Commodore 64 version of this game is used. The group makes electronic music and is characterized by the frequent use of the C64 as a musical instrument.
