Vladimir Tretchikoff
Vladimir Tretchikoff ( Russian Владимир Григорьевич Третчиков , transcribed Vladimir Grigoryevich Trettschikow ; born December 13, 1913 in Petropavlovsk , Russian Empire ; † August 26, 2006 in Cape Town , South Africa ) was a Russian painter.
Life
Trettschikow and his family fled to Manchuria after the October Revolution in Russia . He later also lived in Shanghai and Singapore .
His wife Natalie and daughter Mimi were evacuated to Cape Town in 1941 due to the advancing Japanese army during the Second World War . Tretchikoff himself lived in Jakarta during this time and began an affair with his future model Leonora Schmidt-Salomonson alias Lenka .
In 1946 he returned to his family in South Africa. There he died on August 26, 2006 of complications from a stroke .
Career
Trettschikow was a painter and painted portraits, still lifes and animals. His work was best known for worldwide reproductions and achieved sales figures similar to Picasso's reprints. His best-known work is "The Chinese Girl", a portrait of the then 17-year-old Chinese Monika Sing-Lee, married Pon, which he painted in 1952 in Cape Town . This image represents one of the top-selling reprints in the world. It sold for nearly $ 1.5 million in 2013. Because of his somewhat kitschy , commercially influenced works, he was often criticized and received no awards for his work.
Trivia
Tretchikoff can be seen in Alfred Hitchcock's Frenzy . Chinese Girl was used as the cover for the 1990 album Slap! used by Chumbawamba .
