Vladimir Iosifovich Jamatow , before baptism 1858 Massudo Koossai and Tazibana-no Koossai (, Russian Владимир Иосифович Яматов * 1820 in Japan † May 31, jul. / 12. June 1885 greg. ) Was a Japanese - Russian Japanese studies .
Life
In December 1854, the frigate Diana of the Evfimi Vasilyevich Putjatin mission sank in the port of Shimoda as a result of an earthquake . The Russian team set up camp nearby. There Koossai came to the Russian interpreter Iossif Antonowitsch Goschkewitsch , who wanted to improve his knowledge of the Japanese language . The Japanese government suspected that Koossai was providing the Russian with information about Japan and ordered his execution under a 1637 law. Goschkewitsch then smuggled Koossai in a box onto the Russian brig Greta , on which he left Japan with him in July 1855 . In Hong Kong Goschkewitsch fell due to the ongoing Crimean war in British captivity. While in captivity, Goschkewitsch created the first Japanese - Russian dictionary with the help of Koossai . After the end of the Crimean War, Goschkewitsch came to St. Petersburg with Koossai in 1856 .
In St. Petersburg, Koossai was employed in the Asia Department of the Foreign Ministry, where he then worked as an interpreter. The Japanese-Russian dictionary was printed in 1857, and in 1858 he was baptized with Goschkewitsch as father. He chose his family name with a view to the ancient kingdom of Yamato . In 1870, Vasily Pavlovich Wassiljew pointed out the necessity of teaching Japanese at the Chinese - Mongolian Faculty for Eastern Languages at the University of St. Petersburg , as had already been introduced in Paris and Vienna . Yamatov then began his Japanese course at St. Petersburg University for free. In 1872 he was in charge of the Iwakura mission .
In 1874 Jamatow returned to Japan.
