Wassili Pawlowitsch Wassiljew

Wassili Pawlowitsch Wassiljew ( Russian Василий Павлович Васильев ; born February 20, 1818 in Nizhny Novgorod ; † April 27, 1900 in Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian sinologist and Buddhologist . Wilhelm Grube was one of his students.

biography

In 1837 Vasilyev graduated from the Department of Oriental Languages ​​at the Faculty of History and Philology at the University of Kazan . In 1849 he went to Beijing for the Russian Orthodox Legation , where he learned Sanskrit , Chinese , Mongolian , Tibetan and Manchurian . In 1851 he became a professor at the University of Kazan. In 1855 he became a professor at the University of Petersburg. In 1866 Vasilyev became a corresponding member and in 1886 a full member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences.

Meaning and works

Vasilyev was a scholar with a wide range of interests, who made significant contributions to Sinology ( history , religious studies , geography , language and literature of China ). His most important works:

  • Буддизм, его догматы, история и литература ( The Buddhism , its dogmas , history and literature ; 1857 to 1869). This work is a translation of the Samayabhedopacakra by Vasumitra. It was groundbreaking for Buddhology and this Russian version was also translated into German (St. Petersburg, Eggers 1860) and from German into French ( Le Bouddisme, ses dogmes, son histoire et sa littérature ; Paris 1865).
