Vladimir Nikolajewitsch Lamsdorf
Count Wladimir Nikolajewitsch Lamsdorf ( Russian Влади́мир Никола́евич Ла́мсдорф / Wladimir Nikolajewitsch Lamsdorf , * December 25, 1844 July / 6 January 1845 greg. In Saint Petersburg ; † 6 March jul. / 19 March 1907 greg. In San Remo ) was a Russian diplomat and statesman of Baltic German descent. From 1900 to 1906 he was Foreign Minister of the Russian Empire .
Life
Lamsdorf was a graduate of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum and the Law Faculty of the University of Saint Petersburg when he entered the diplomatic service of Russia (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) in 1866, where he was promoted to 1st Secretary and finally to Ministerial Council in 1875. He was a member of the Russian delegation at the Berlin Congress , took part in the negotiations for the Three Emperor League, was involved in the negotiations for the final confirmation of the alliance in Skierniewice in 1884 and in the Russian delegation at the meeting of Tsar Alexander III in 1886. and Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria. In 1897 he became Deputy Foreign Minister and in 1899 also Chief of Staff for Foreign Affairs, and in 1899 he headed the Russian delegation to the first Hague Peace Conference .
Lamsdorf became foreign minister in December 1900, in the first years of his tenure he concentrated on the Balkans , although he sympathized with the Slavs in the Balkans, he tried to prevent the collapse of the Ottoman Empire for strategic reasons. However, the Russo-Japanese War and the Russian Revolution of 1905 also fell during his term of office . Lamsdorf abdicated in 1906.
