Wladimir Wassiljewitsch Karpow ( Russian Владимир Васильевич Карпов ; born July 28, 1922 in Orenburg , † January 19, 2010 in Moscow ) was a Russian writer. His work, which is strongly autobiographical, deals primarily with military topics.

Life

Vladimir Karpov grew up in Tashkent . From 1939 he attended the local infantry school . Before he could finish his training, he was arrested in 1941 on the basis of a denunciation and sentenced to five years imprisonment for allegedly "participating in a conspiracy against the existing social system" and denigrating Josef Stalin . After he had asked in several letters of petition to be drafted into military service, he was assigned to a penal company in October 1942 . Because of his bravery, his conviction was overturned in January 1943 and he was transferred to a regular reconnaissance unit .

After his discharge from military service, Vladimir Karpov continued his studies and published his first literary works. In 1947 he graduated from the military academy "MW Frunze" , in 1954 the Moscow Literature Institute Maxim Gorky , which he had attended in evening studies. Karpov then served in the Turkestan Military District for ten years .

In the mid-sixties he quit military service and worked as an editor and writer. From 1979 to 1986 he was editor-in-chief of Nowy Mir magazine . In 1986 he was elected chairman of the Soviet Writers' Union.

In the 1990s, Vladimir Karpov was largely forgotten. He caused a certain stir with his rather apologetic Stalin biography The Generalissimo , published in 2002 , which became one of his greatest successes as a writer.
