Haselünne-Dörgen residential area

The Haselünne-Dörgen residential area was discovered in 1935 by F. Wolf in the area of a sand extraction point. He examined a small area of the residential area in the Haselünner suburb of Dörgen, north of the Hase in Lower Saxony and dating from the late Paleolithic .

About 1.35 m below today's surface, a round discoloration was uncovered under undisturbed dune and bleaching sand, humus soil and yellow- red local stone in the yellow sand, which was capped in the western part by a fault. The pit was about 2.5 m in diameter and about 0.65 m deep in the middle. It contained loose charcoal residues, as found occasionally at its base. A fireplace was not recorded.

The found material consists of drills , notch points , burins , blade scrapers, prongs as well as tees , blades and cores . Certain basic shapes and individual tool classes were distributed differently on the surface. 80 tools and 150 blades were concentrated on the three m² area uncovered by F. Wolf, while only 103 artefacts (including six tools) come from the twelve times larger excavation area by WD Asmus, which he uncovered in 1936 during a subsequent excavation . The nine notch points lay side by side in the west of the depression. Twelve blade scratches were found on the bottom of the pit, on the tiny area of 100 cm². The number of tools decreased towards the edge, the number of chips (especially the cores), which were also found widely scattered outside the pit-like depression, increased.

According to the range of tools, the complex of finds belongs to Hamburg culture . However, it is older than the Alleröd (11,000–10,000 BC). In terms of research history, the finding is significant as the first of its kind in Lower Saxony, especially since hardly any further evidence has been added from the Hasetal or the Emsland since then . Its importance lies primarily in the findings of the pit, which could represent the rest of a sunken dwelling.
