The Lockerwiese settlement is an urban settlement of the City of Vienna in the 13th district of Hietzing with over 750 residential units. It was built in several stages from 1928 according to plans by Karl Schartelmüller and is the second largest garden urban settlement in Vienna after the Karl-Seitz-Hof .

Name and location

The land on which the settlement was built was pastureland and had the field name “Lockerwiese” because of “loose earth on the site”, which was taken over.

The settlement is bounded in the south by supply home road, in the west by Wolkersbergen road, in the north by Engelhartgasse and Wilhelm-Leibl-Gasse and in the east by Seelosgasse, Schirnböckgasse, Egon-Schiele-Gasse and Waldvogelstraße. The S-shaped curved Faistauergasse, which leads from north to south, represents the main connection within the settlement. The center of the settlement is Holowatyj-Platz, which is located at the intersection of Faistauergasse and Camillianergasse.

history

The community settlement planned by Karl Schartelmüller and built by GESIBA was built in several stages. In the first construction phase, the southern area of the settlement between Camillianergasse and supply home road was built from 1928 to 1930, and from 1930 to 1932 the present central area of the settlement between Camillianergasse and Wolkersbergenstrasse was developed. In 1938/39 the settlement was expanded to the north by 120 row houses and a block with 12 storey apartments as well as a party club of the NSDAP. The architect Schartelmüller was commissioned for this expansion. In 1950/51, a sports field with four rows of houses was built in the area of the supply home area according to plans by Franz Mörth and Otto Schönthal , and in 1953 Adolf Wölzl carried out a series of roof extensions.

From 2008 to 2016, the listed estate was extensively renovated for around 30 million euros.
