In 2001 the group still employed around 770 people and achieved annual sales of around 100 million euros. In the course of a management buyout to the financial investor Andreas Heeschen , combined with a capital increase and restructuring , the Wolf family completely parted with their shares in 2004. After the company had achieved the best annual result in its history to date in 2007, Wolf-Garten became insolvent in December 2008 and filed for bankruptcy in January 2009 .

In April 2009 it was announced that the US company MTD Products was taking over Wolf-Garten. The parent company MTD Inc. is one of the largest manufacturers of motor garden equipment worldwide. Since the completion of the takeover, Wolf-Garten only exists as a brand of MTD based in Saarbrücken. The specialist trade brand Wolf Garten Expert was discontinued in 2019
