Wolf Codera

Wolf-Gunther Codera (born October 12, 1961 in Bochum ) is a German saxophonist and clarinetist .

Life

Wolf Codera got his first clarinet and took lessons at the age of eleven, and later taught himself to play the saxophone . At the age of fifteen she made her first recordings, gave concerts as a soloist in large orchestras and won the “ Jugend jazzt ” music competition as a clarinetist. After graduating from school, he began studying medicine , which he had to abandon due to a serious lung disease ( sarcoid ). Then he decided to go into music as a profession.

invention

Since his breathing was so restricted by the disease of the lungs that playing the saxophone was out of the question, he developed a patent , the so-called "Reso-blade" discs. Instead of the traditional lid, the saxophone uses a thin metal disc with a narrow sealing ring made of special foam. As a result, the flaps close more tightly, are easier to move, and less air is needed to play.

Projects

While he was still ill, Codera composed jingles for the radio and background music for television. Later he worked as a music teacher, studio musician, played in various bands and at dance events. In 1999 he completed his first tour alongside the classical music stars Anna Maria Kaufmann and Peter Hofmann .

Since then he has been regularly on stage, playing rock, pop, soul, but also classical and sacred music. He realizes his own projects under the name "Codera goes ...". Recently, Codera has been working intensively on meditative and choral music. In this way a new CD "Wolf Codera Goes Meditation" was created, which, through the collaboration with the Moroccan percussionist Rhani Krija (including Sting ), received an unmistakable style in which the flowing soprano saxophone sounds invite calm and activity. Giora Feidman , a well-known representative of Klezmer music and Oscar winner (film music for "Schindler's List"), was so impressed with this production that he agreed to give a concert with Codera and Krija and also on ARD Show "Play me the song of life" to play together with the two.

Session Possible

The idea for "Session Possible" arose during a tour of Germany with the "Voices from the Phantom of the Opera" - Peter Hofmann and Anna-Maria Kaufmann. Three musicians belonging to the tour ensemble, drummer Martin Stöck from Pur , TV total bassist Claus Fischer and Wolf Codera did not play the musical songs in the sound checks, but simply what they wanted to do. “You should do something like that in front of an audience,” they thought: “with titles that the musicians like, but which the audience also knows.” This is why the “Session Possible” project was founded; the musicians perform in Hattingen, Wuppertal, Solingen, Dortmund, Oberhausen and Herten, among others.
