Wolfgang Babilas (born September 19, 1929 in Ratibor ; † June 4, 2016 in Münster ) was a German Romance studies and literary scholar.

life and work

Babilas, who lost his father in 1945, came to Münster in 1946, where he attended the Paulinum grammar school . From 1950 he studied Romance studies, German studies, film studies and philosophy there and in Paris. In 1957 he received his doctorate from Heinrich Lausberg with the work Personnalité de la France. An investigation into the image of France in the poetry of Paul Claudel (published ud T. The image of France in Paul Claudel's “Personnalité de la France” , Münster, Aschendorff, 1957). As assistant to Lausberg, he completed his habilitation in 1965 with the work Investigations on the Sermoni subalpini with an excursus on the ten angel choir teaching (Munich, Hueber, 1968) and was full professor for Romance philology (also dean) in Münster from 1971 to 1994. .

Babilas was married to the translator Lydia Babilas, b. Hiller (1930–2007), daughter of the sculptor Anton Hiller . Babilas' particular research interest was Louis Aragon , whose works were largely translated by Lydia Babilas. From 1997 to 2012, Babilas managed a bilingual website about Louis Aragon, whom he had known personally since 1971.
