Wolfgang David (prehistoric)

Wolfgang David (* 1961 in Kassel ) is a German prehistoric archaeologist and director of the Archaeological Museum in Frankfurt am Main .

Career

After graduating from the Friedrichsgymnasium Kassel and completing fifteen months of basic military service with the Army Air Defense Force in Rendsburg and Kassel, David studied prehistory, provincial Roman archeology and ancient history at the universities of Munich, Bonn and Saarbrücken. At the University of Munich , he completed his master's degree in 1987 and was awarded his doctorate by Georg Kossack in 1993 with a dissertation on Carpathian bronzes from the end of the older and beginning Middle Bronze Age . From 1991 to 2004 he worked as a research assistant and assistant at the Institute for Pre- and Protohistoric Archeology and Provincial Roman Archaeologist at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In his scientific work, David dedicates himself to the Bronze Age and the archeology and history of the Celts . Another research field includes the archeology of the 20th century, in particular excavations in the former Dachau concentration camp .

In 2014 David was elected a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and the Istituto Italiano di Preistoria e Protostoria .

From 2005 to 2017 David was director of the Celtic Roman Museum in Manching, a state branch museum of the Munich State Archaeological Collection, which opened in 2006 . David is also a lecturer for Prehistory and Protohistory at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg . On January 1, 2018, Wolfgang David succeeded Egon Wamers as managing director of the Archaeological Museum Frankfurt am Main.
