Wolfgang Decker (sports historian)

Wolfgang Decker (born July 27, 1941 in Trier ; † April 28, 2020 ) was a German sports historian and Egyptologist .

Decker studied at the German Sport University in Cologne , where he earned the title of qualified sports teacher . He studied Egyptology at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate in 1971 under Philippe Derchain . In 1974 he completed his habilitation at the German Sport University. From 1976 until his retirement he was professor for the history of sport at the German Sport University. He was a fellow of the European Committee for Sports History .

Wolfgang Decker researched in particular in the field of sports in ancient Egypt and ancient Greece. He has been co-editor of Nikephoros magazine since 1989 . Magazine for Sports and Culture in Antiquity .
