Nikephoros (magazine)

Nikephorus. Journal of Sports and Culture in Antiquity is a scientific journal in the field of ancient studies .

Nikephoros combines philological, historical and archaeological studies on sports from all over the ancient world ( prehistoric cultures , ancient oriental and ancient Egyptian cultures, ancient Mediterranean cultures, classical antiquity , late antiquity , the Byzantine world and the history of reception in humanism and modern times). The focus of the magazine is always the respective sport in all its athletic and musical forms and how it is embedded in religion, culture, politics, law, education and everyday life.

Nikephoros has been published annually in a volume by Weidmann since 1988 . The editors are Paul Christesen , Wolfgang Decker , James G. Howie, Christian Mann , Peter Mauritsch, Zinon Papakonstantinou, Robert Rollinger , Ingomar Weiler , formerly Christoph Ulf , Joachim Ebert and Ulrich Sinn as well as the institutional editors of the Institute for Ancient History and Archeology the Karl-Franzens University Graz , the Institute for Ancient History and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at the Leopold-Franzens University Innsbruck and the Institute for Sports History at the German Sport University Cologne . The editorial team is based at the Institute for Ancient History and Archeology of the Karl-Franzens-University Graz, namely Werner Petermandl. Only the reviews are supervised by Wolfgang Decker by name at the Institute for Sports History at the German Sport University Cologne. In addition to the magazine, supplements are also published.
