Heribert Aigner
Heribert Aigner (born July 7, 1943 in Leoben ; † February 14, 2015 ) was an Austrian ancient historian .
Life
After visiting the elementary school from 1949 to 1953 and Bundesrealgymnasium 1953-1961 Aigner began with a teaching degree the subjects German , history and art history at the Karl-Franzens University Graz . From 1964 he worked as a research assistant at the University's Institute for History and Antiquity . He completed his studies with a doctorate sub auspiciis Praesidentis , supervised by the institute . His dissertation , submitted in 1968, was entitled The Army as a Power Factor in the outgoing Roman Republic ; the reviewers were Franz Hampl and Hermann Wiesflecker .
From 1969 Aigner taught at the University of Graz. In 1981 he completed his habilitation with the work Der Sumord im Mythos and received the Venia legendi for the nominal subject "Ancient history and antiquity". In 1984 he was awarded the professional title of Associate University Professor by the President of the Republic of Austria.
Aigner taught at the Universities of Graz, Innsbruck , Padua and Klagenfurt and has been involved in numerous excavations in Austria since the beginning of the sixties. a. in Carnuntum . From 1999 he was dean of studies of the humanities faculty at the University of Graz, where he retired in 2008.
Aigner was considered a universalist in the field of ancient history with knowledge of prehistory and early history up to the Latin Renaissance.
He lived and worked in Switzerland and Austria.
Memberships and editorships
Aigner has been Vice President of the International Society for the History of Physical Education and Sport (ISHPES) since 1997, and a board member of the Austrian Olympic Academy since 1998 . He was also vice-president of the Grazer Morgenländische Gesellschaft (GMG, since 1993) and a member of the Swiss Society for Pre- and Protohistory (SGUF, also since 1993).
Aigner had published the series of Grazer Archeological Studies (GAST) since 1995 and was co-editor of the communications of the Grazer Morgenländische Gesellschaft .
