Steffen Wenig (born July 15, 1934 in Berlin ) is a German Egyptologist and Sudan archaeologist .

Steffen Wenig completed his studies in Egyptology and African Studies in 1959 with the state examination. He then worked as a research assistant at the Egyptian Museum until 1978 , most recently as deputy director. In addition to his scientific work at the museum , he received his doctorate in 1964 on the subject of studies of the iconography of the representations of the Meroite royal family and questions of the chronology of the empire of Meroe . 1979 followed the dissertation B with the title The representations at the lion temple by Musawwarat es-Sufra, studies of the iconography, content and composition of the reliefs . In 1978 he moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin as a research assistant , swapping positions with Karl-Heinz Priese . In 1981 he became a lecturer in Meroistics , in 1984 an extraordinary professor and in 1993 a full professor of Sudan archeology. On behalf of the professor, he also taught as a professor of Egyptology at the University of Vienna, which is very renowned in this subject . In 1999 he retired.

Little often connects several components in his work. He is both an expert in the field of Egyptology, but also - and particularly distinguished here - in the tradition of his teacher Fritz Hintze, Sudan archaeologist. He is a researcher in the museum as well as in the university version of his subject. At the end of the 1960s he was one of the founders of the Corpus Antiquitatum Aegytiacorum . He was a representative of the GDR on the executive committee of this international project. For career reasons, he also joined the SED . In 1984 he was appointed the first professor of Sudan archeology at the HUB, a subject that has so far only developed independently there. After the political change, Wenig had to work permanently to preserve the subject. To support the subject, he initiated the foundation of the Sudan Archaeological Society in Berlin . Excavations were carried out by Wenig in Musawwarat es-Sufra . He is a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute and is on the advisory board of the magazine Nikephoros .
