Peter Frisch (philologist)

Peter Frisch (born September 12, 1942 ; † April 14, 2015 ) was a German classical philologist , epigraphist and papyrologist .

Life

Peter Frisch studied classical philology at the University of Cologne and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . In his dissertation, supervised by Reinhold Merkelbach , he dealt with the dreams in the history of Herodotus . Frisch deepened his studies with the epigraphers Antony E. Raubitschek at Stanford University (1968/1969) and Louis Robert in Paris (1969/1970). He then went on extensive research trips to Asia Minor . In 1978 he completed his habilitation at the university in the subject "Classical Philology with special emphasis on epigraphy". Shortly afterwards he took on the Latinist chair at Saarland University . In 1981 he was appointed adjunct professor in Cologne, and in 1986 professor. In 2007 he retired.

Frisch occupied himself with Greek epigraphy and papyrology all his life. He edited several volumes of the series of inscriptions of Greek cities from Asia Minor , namely for the cities of Ilion (1975), Lampsakos (1978) and Parion (1983). The history of sport in antiquity became his special research focus , for which, in addition to inscriptions, he mainly used papyri that had not been published before . Most of his essays appeared in the Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik . Frisch was co-founder and member of the scientific advisory board of the journal Nikephoros (from 1988).
