Christian Wallner (born March 30, 1948 in Gmunden ; † March 9, 2010 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian writer, columnist and cabaret artist .

Life

Christian Wallner lived in his youth in Thalheim near Wels , where his father was mayor for many years. He attended high school in Wels . He then studied history , classical philology and journalism at the University of Salzburg . During his studies and afterwards he worked for daily newspapers, the ORF and for German broadcasters. Since 1966 Wallner lived and worked permanently in Salzburg . He has published prose, poetry , essays , radio plays , screenplays, cabaret programs , columns and has received numerous grants, prizes and honors. Of his television work, a program about Georg Trakl (1979) and a documentary television play about the church and the Nazi state with the title “Der Onion Dome” (1983) on the life of Andreas Rieser attracted particular attention.

Wallner was a dramaturge at the Salzburger Landestheater , board member of the Graz Authors ' Assembly, member of the Salzburg authors' group , also member of the editorial board of the literary magazines "SALZ" and " Wespennest ", jury member of the Bruno Kreisky Prize and the Rauriser Literature Prize , "Writer in Residence" (Austin , Texas), moderator of television talk shows, director of writing workshops and has written numerous articles for yearbooks and anthologies.

As the author and performer of his own cabaret programs (“Gruppe MotzArt”) in collaboration with other Salzburg cabaret artists such as Gerald Fratt and Gerhard Laber , Wallner made a name for himself from 1983 as the founder and programmer of the international cabaret festival “MotzArt Week”. (This word playful name is a combination of the colloquial word “mozen” for “nörgeln” and the English word “art”; it is a satirical reaction to the “Mozart Week” concert series established in Salzburg's high culture.) Local and regional Christian Wallner was best known for his weekly Saturday column in the “ Salzburger Nachrichten ”.

For years, Wallner was also active within the framework of ARGE-Kultur Salzburg and played a significant role in the construction and design of the new building for this facility.

Christian Wallner died in March 2010, three weeks before the age of 62, of complications from cancer.
