from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Gaul (born July 3, 1945 in Stolp, Pomerania ) is a professor emeritus of business administration and management sciences, as well as the former head of the Institute for Decision Theory and Business Research at the University of Karlsruhe (today: Karlsruhe Institute of Technology ).

Life

Gaul studied mathematics at the University of Bonn and received his doctorate there in 1974, before he also received his habilitation in 1980 at the University of Bonn. In the same year he was called to the then University of Karlsruhe (TH) , where he and Hermann Göppl took over the management of the Institute for Decision Theory and Business Research.

In addition to fundamental new and further developments of methodological approaches, such as in cluster and conjoint analysis or in data and web mining, Wolfgang Gaul is particularly known for his pioneering research on the subject of computer-aided marketing. As early as the late 1980s, he foresaw how important developments in communication and information technology would be for the marketing application field in the future. With works such as “Computer-assisted Marketing”, which was published together with Martin Both, he gave modern marketing research access to communication and information technology.

Another trend-setting research project by Professor Gaul was the so-called WIMDAS project together with Martin Schader, which dealt with knowledge-based marketing data analysis as part of a DFG project .

Engagement in scientific societies

In addition, Gaul is a member of numerous scientific societies. Particularly noteworthy is his commitment to the Society for Classification (GfKl). As part of his longstanding membership, he first appeared in 1985 as the organizer of a GfKl conference in Karlsruhe. From 1989 Gaul acted as a board member of the GfKl before he assumed the office of the GfKl association president in 1995. Since 1998 he has been active in the company as an advisory board member responsible for conferences. He was also the head of the program committee in 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2002.

In the past, Gaul was also with the International Federation of Classification Societies (board member from 1987 to 1990 and from 1994 to 2001), the Society for Mathematics, Economics and Operations Research (treasurer from 1990 to 1995, as well as member of the scientific committee between 1996 and 1998), the Society for Operations Research (member of the scientific committee since 1998) and at the German Society for Operations Research (head of the program committee in 1991).

social commitment

In 2001 he founded the Helga and Wolfgang Gaul Foundation together with his wife Helga . The purpose of the foundation is to support excellent scientific research as well as to support people with disabilities who cannot participate in scientific life.
