Wolfgang Gruhle (born July 23, 1924 ; † 2017 ) was a German physicist .

Life

The son of Hans Walter Gruhle grew up in Heidelberg and Ravensburg. After graduating from high school in 1942, he was drafted into the army on July 1, initially completed his basic training in Constance and in 1943 went to work as a radio operator for a communications unit in Saloniki, Greece. After only a week he and his comrades were transferred to Belgrade. On the side he learned to encrypt radio messages with the Enigma. In 1944 Gruhle was transferred to Zagreb, where he had to maintain contact between the Army Group Command and the Graz decipherers. Radio messages by Tito's partisans were decrypted and to the message liaison officer of Army Group E sent. In May 1945, he and his comrades packed their radio technology on a truck and set off for home.

From 1947 he studied physics in Heidelberg, Bonn and Cologne , where he received his doctorate in 1956 and obtained his habilitation in 1969. During this time he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg and in the USA. From 1960 he was Professor of Physics at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the University of Cologne. In 1986 he retired. In the late 1990s, he and the wood scientist Burghart Schmidt (* 1943; former head of the laboratory for dendrochronology at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Cologne) developed a method for calculating what they called the uniformity of tree growth. The results of these calculations are the basis of their dendroclimatological investigations, which they relate to archaeological and historical events. Gruhle lived with his wife in Bergisch Gladbach until his death and was the author of a string quartet dictionary.
