Wolfgang Knöbl

Wolfgang Knöbl (born June 11, 1963 ) is a German sociologist and director of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research .

Life

Wolfgang Knöbl studied sociology at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg and then worked from 1990 to 1995 as a research assistant to the sociologist Hans Joas at the John F. Kennedy Institute at the Free University of Berlin . In 1995 he received his doctorate there in sociology with Hans Joas with a thesis on "Police and rule in the modernization process: State formation and internal security in Prussia, England and America 1700-1914". In 2000 Knöbl also completed his habilitation at the Free University of Berlin with Hans Joas with a thesis on "Scope of Modernization: The End of Unambiguity".

In 2002 he was offered a professorship for sociology at the University of Göttingen . Knöbl had fellowships at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS) and at the Max Weber College for Cultural and Social Studies at the University of Erfurt . In 1997 he was Theodor Heuss Lecturer at the New School for Social Research in New York City.

Wolfgang Knöbl is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences .

On April 2, 2015, Knöbl took over the management of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, thus succeeding Jan Philipp Reemtsma , the founder and founder of the institute.

Since June 2017, Knöbl has been a part-time professor for political sociology and violence research at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg .

His research interests are the history of sociology, political sociology, the sociology of violence, social theory and theories of modernization.
