Wolfgang Laade

Wolfgang Laade (born January 13, 1925 in Zeitz ; † September 17, 2013 in Wädenswil ) was a German ethnomusicologist .

From 1954 Laade studied ethnomusicology, music history , systematic musicology and ethnology at the Free University of Berlin and received his doctorate in 1960. In 1972 he completed his habilitation at the University of Zurich , where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1980 . In 1990 he retired.

Laade collected sound carriers, books and musical instruments with the aim of documenting "musical forms of expression around the world as they are embedded in larger socio-cultural contexts". He researched the music cultures of indigenous peoples, some of which are threatened, in Lapland , Oceania , Sri Lanka , New Guinea , Taiwan and Zimbabwe . For his life's work he was awarded the international award in cultural anthropology, the Sigillo d'Oro Pitrè - Salomone Marino . His collection is now kept as the “Music of Man Archive” at the Center for World Music of the University of Hildesheim Foundation .
