Wolfgang T. Meyer (born March 19, 1936 in Münster ) is a German mathematician who deals with differential geometry . He is a professor at the University of Münster .

Live and act

Meyer received his doctorate in 1965 at the University of Bonn with Friedrich Hirzebruch (and Wilhelm Klingenberg ) (critical manifolds in Hilbert manifolds). He was at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and was full professor in Münster from 1977. In 2001 he retired .

According to him, and Detlef Gromoll are Gromoll Meyer spheres named (an exotic 7-sphere, ie with unusual differential structure). Two theorems proved by him and Gromoll about manifolds with closed geodesics or positive curvature are named after both ( theorem of Gromoll-Meyer (geodesics) , theorem of Gromoll-Meyer (positive curvature) ).

Burkhard Wilking is one of his doctoral students , who is the successor to Meyer's chair in Münster.
