Wolfgang Siegfried Herrmann (* 1944 in Görlitz ) is a German psycholinguist and professor emeritus at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main . Since 1987 he has been honorary director of the Institute for Speech Medicine.

Live and act

Growing up in Ratzeburg , Herrmann graduated from the Lauenburg School of Academics in 1963 . After studying German, philosophy and sports science, he passed the state examinations for teaching at secondary schools in 1967 and 1969. In 1970 he did his doctorate at the University of Heidelberg with a thesis on the mind-body problem in Tristan von Gottfried von Straßburg under Peter Wapnewski .

After his habilitation at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg with a thesis on the situation and norms, he accepted an appointment at the University of Frankfurt / Main in 1976. His research initially focused mainly on psycholinguistic topics. In 1983, in addition to his teaching post for didactics of German language and literature, he qualified as a Dipl.-Psych. at the University of Giessen with a thesis on standard situations of aggressive interaction in school lessons and thus founded the linguistic theory of the standard situation.

Since the early 1980s Herrmann has been working in the human medicine department in the care of people with language disorders (doctorate in 1993 with a thesis on language acquisition in children with cleft lip and palate). From 1987 until his retirement he headed the Institute for Speech Medicine in Rosbach near Frankfurt. In addition to caring for language patients, the institute's work since 2001 has focused on questions of linguogenetics and since 2007 on exploring esoteric questions about the development of language.

He is the father of the psychologist Christoph S. Herrmann .
