Wolfgang Speiser (born September 20, 1909 in Vienna ; † May 27, 1994 ibid) was an Austrian lawyer and adult educator.

Life

Wolfgang Speiser was born as the son of Paul Speiser .

Wolfgang Speiser studied law at the University of Vienna and graduated in 1933 with a Dr. jur. from. During the time of Austrofascism he defended social democrats in court, including Bruno Kreisky . When Austria joined Hitler's Germany, he emigrated to Australia and returned to Vienna in 1946.

Wolfgang Speiser was director of the Vienna Urania from 1947 to 1961 and from February 1, 1947 worked as the central secretary of the Vienna adult education centers. From 1950 to 1974 he was the general secretary of the Association of Austrian Adult Education Centers that was co-initiated .

In 1964 Speiser became Vice President of the European Bureau for Adult Education .

Speiser is considered a pioneer and doyen of the adult education centers in Austria after 1945 and set new accents with contemporary history and political education . He developed the collaboration between popular education and the new medium of television. He was involved in the adoption of the Adult Education Promotion Act (1973).
