Athletic career

Weißenborn joined the football section of TSC Berlin in 1964, a year after the club was founded . The club used him in the 2nd team, which played in the third-rate East Berlin district league. When the soccer section was separated from the TSC in January 1966 and the 1. FC Union Berlin was founded with their teams, Weißenborn was one of the players that were taken over. He remained in the 2nd team, which concluded the 1965/66 season as district champion. Since Union II was not eligible for promotion, Weissenborn continued to play third class.

In the summer of 1967 Weißenborn came to his first missions in the first team of Union Berlin, when he was used in three Intercup games . His first game for Union I was the match 1. FC Union Berlin - Union Teplice (0: 1). In the further course of the 1967/68 season, Weissenborn also played two games of the first team in the GDR soccer cup. Although he was later not used in the victorious final (Union - Carl Zeiss Jena 2: 1), with these two games he had a small share in the Unioner's 1968 cup win . In addition, Weißenborn continued to play in the 2nd team. It was only in the 1968/69 season that he got the chance to offer himself for the Oberliga team. After he had already completed two cup games with the first team in the fall, Weißenborn was used for the first time on March 15, 1969 in a league game. In the match on the 18th match day between FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and 1. FC Union (2-2), he was used in the 88th minute. On April 26, 1969 he was in the game 1. FC Union Berlin - FC Carl Zeiss Jena (1: 2) in the 63rd minute for use. With Union II he was able to keep himself harmless and book a minimal success by winning the district championship in 1969. After Union had to relegate at the end of the 1968/69 season, Weißenborn offered no opportunities for further league missions, but he was not used in the GDR league games of the 1st team. Only one further cup use was recorded in the summer of 1969.

After only ten competitive games with the 1st Union team, Weißenborn was drafted into military service in November 1969. He was able to do this as a football player in the army sports community Vorwärts Neubrandenburg in the second-rate GDR league . After the end of his military service in May 1971, Weißenborn also ended his career as a competitive athlete. He moved to the East Berlin sports club Friedrichshagen, with whom played in the district league until relegation in 1977.
