Wolfgang zu Stolberg

Count Wolfgang zu Stolberg (born October 1, 1501 in Stolberg im Harz , † March 8, 1552 in Allstedt ) was a German politician.

Life

Wolfgang was the eldest son of Count Botho zu Stolberg and his wife Anna von Eppstein-Königstein . At a young age he became provost of the cathedral in Halberstadt and Naumburg and on May 1, 1521 Rector magnificus of the University of Wittenberg .

When his father died in 1538, he continued to run the government in the Stolberg estates with the authorization of his brothers Ludwig and Albrecht Georg and made sure that the territory was not weakened by splintering, as occurred after his death. He himself took over the Allstedt office for himself in an inheritance division .

Count Wolfgang professed the teachings of Martin Luther and had the Reformation carried out in the Stolberg possessions. He is the founder of the Harz line of the Stolberg family, which died out in the male line with the death of his grandson, Count Wolfgang Georg zu Stolberg , in 1631.

Wolfgang married Dorothea, the daughter of Count Ulrich von Regenstein , on June 20, 1541 . She died in 1545. Their son Wolfgang died giving birth in 1544.

In his 2nd marriage he took Genovefa, the daughter of Count Johann III, in Königstein im Taunus on February 28, 1546 . zu Wied, Mr. zu Runkel and Ysenburg († 1533). She survived her husband and died on June 26, 1556.
