Wolfram Dorn (born June 6, 1946 in Halle (Saale) ) is a German veterinarian and university professor . He was a co-founder, department head and long-time director of the Institute for Nutritional Sciences at Friedrich Schiller University Jena .

Life

Wolfram Dorn was born in Halle (Saale), studied veterinary medicine at the University of Leipzig from 1966 to 1971 and completed his training as a qualified veterinarian. In 1972 he received his veterinary license and began his work as a scientific assistant, later as a senior assistant in the animal hygiene science department at Leipzig University. The following 15 years were marked by the processing of extensive animal hygiene projects, such as the influence of light regimes and their importance for the health and performance of calves and pigs or the relevance of the environment for defense against infection. In 1978 he defended his doctorate and in 1984 his habilitation thesis. Then he was appointed to the university lecturer for animal hygiene at the University of Leipzig.

In 1989 he was appointed professor of animal hygiene at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. After the political change , he played a key role in setting up the Institute for Nutritional Sciences in Jena, which he was the first director.

On June 6, 2011, he officially retired.

Function and role at the Institute for Nutritional Sciences in Jena

In 1989, a department of agricultural sciences was founded as the first step on the way to re-establishing an agricultural sciences faculty at the Jena High School. When the structure of the Friedrich Schiller University was rethought after the fall of the Wall, an agricultural faculty was not re-established, but with the Senate resolution of February 6, 1991, the establishment of the courses in nutrition and environmental and landscape design, which was on May 13, 1991 has been requested from the relevant ministry. On July 17, 1991, the Ministry of Science approved the establishment of the nutritional science course . This enabled the first 69 nutrition science students to be enrolled in September 1991 and the students who had already enrolled in agricultural training in 1990 to continue their studies at the FSU Jena according to the new curriculum, of which the first 34 passed away as graduate trophologists after completing the standard period of study in autumn 1994 were. Since then, the institute has continued to develop and has established itself as a permanent fixture at the Jena study location. Dorn played a significant role in this, because he was not only committed as the head of his department for food and environmental hygiene, as a university lecturer and supervisor for many graduate and doctoral students, but also as the institute director for almost twelve years. In this function he was also able to invite to the festive colloquium 20 Years of the Institute for Nutritional Sciences at the Alma Mater Jenensis on November 4, 2010.

research

Dorn has been investigating the occurrence of Borrelia burgdorferi s since 1992 . l., the causative agent of Lyme borreliosis , in Thuringia. This tick-borne multisystem disease is the most common arthropod-associated infectious disease in the northern hemisphere. Although intensive research is being carried out in this area, the infection cycle and the influencing factors are still largely not understood. Also, due to the large number of variants of the surface proteins (outer surface proteins = Osp) in the various genospecies, no vaccine has yet existed. The aim of his investigations was therefore to identify seasonal and local peculiarities in the occurrence of the individual genospecies in the natural vectors and reservoir animals and to find causes for these. The main topics of Dorn's scientific work at the Institute for Nutritional Sciences in Jena were:

  • Epidemiological studies on Borrelia burgdorferi s. l.
  • Studies of the prevalence of tick-associated pathogens in the vector Ixodes ricinus and their reservoir hosts
  • Role of different biotic and abiotic environmental factors in the infection cycle of Borrelia burgdorferi s. l. and the impact on the risk of infection for humans
  • Influence of abiotic environmental factors on animal health and the quality of food
  • Epidemiological studies of environmentally associated diseases in humans and animals

Teaching

During his time as a university lecturer at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Dorn contributed a great deal to the comprehensive training of Jena graduates of the nutritional sciences course. He has offered extensive series of lectures in the areas of food hygiene, human biology and food quality assurance. He supervised many graduate students and led young scientists to doctorate. Selection of dissertations:

  • J. Franke: On the importance of the vector Ixodes ricinus and various host species for the spread of tick-associated pathogens. 2010.
  • S. Kipp: Genetic heterogeneity of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and host-vector relationships in natural herds. 2008.

Non-university activities

From the mid-1990s, Dorn, who is a veterinarian specializing in animal hygiene, was actively involved in shaping the self-administration of the veterinary in Thuringia. He has chaired the Chamber's Examination Committee for many years, is Deputy Chairman of the Further Education and Training Committee and has been a member of the Chamber Assembly for several legislative periods. In these functions he was involved in the preparation and implementation of successful veterinary days in Thuringia.
