The United States Geological Survey mapped them using the United States Navy's own surveys and aerial photographs from 1959 to 1964. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names named them in 1970 after Daniel R. Womochel, a biologist at McMurdo Station between 1967 and 1968.
