Wonderful Dream (Holidays Are Coming) is an English language song by singer Melanie Thornton, who died in a plane crash in 2001 . It comes from the album Ready to Fly .

history

The song Wonderful Dream was created in 2001 based on the original Coca-Cola jingle Holidays are Coming , which was first broadcast in 1996 in a commercial with the Coca-Cola Christmas trucks.

After Melanie Thornton had an accident on November 24, 2001 on Crossair flight 3597, the song climbed to number 3 in the German charts. The song was best known for its media exposure through the Coca-Cola Christmas advertising campaigns on television; it was used for advertising from 2001 to 2005 - in 2006 Melanie Thornton was replaced by Sarah Connor ( The Best Side of Life ).

Compared to the first release in 2001, the new release in 2006 also includes a remix and a music video on the CD. Another remix of the song can be found on the 2003 album Memories - Her Most Beautiful Ballads . However, the replacement by Sarah Connor was only temporary, since 2007 - due to numerous protests - Wonderful Dream was played again.

Despite the protests of the past, Coca-Cola decided to accompany the 2010 Christmas campaign with the song Shake Up Christmas by the Californian band Train . In 2013, a slightly modified version of the spot from previous years was accompanied by Wonderful Dream .

History and background information

It all started with the well-known Coca-Cola slogan “Always the real thing” - the songwriters Rich Airis, Scott Temper, Mitchell Lennox, Julien Nairolf, Ben Naftali, Terri Coffey, Jon Nettlefbey and Melanie Thornton themselves wrote the song “around the advertising slogan “Around.

The background voices in the song come from Colin Rich (who later appeared under a pseudonym as a candidate for the first season of The Voice of Germany and as a candidate for the show X Factor in 2012), Laila Manke, Michael Keller, Oscar Sheercan and Melanie Thornton. The single was produced by Julien Nairolf and Mitchell Lennox.

Music video

It is not known whether a separate music video was originally planned or whether it was shot before Melanie Thornton's death. The music video for Wonderful Dream (Holidays Are Coming) , directed by Oliver Sommer, is a compilation of Melanie Thornton's previous videos. For example, scenes from the videos for Love How You Love Me and Heartbeat can be seen - including previously unreleased outtakes. Furthermore, an excerpt from the singer's last concert on November 24, 2001 in Leipzig is shown every now and then. Finally, to fill in the gaps, various scenes are recorded by the choir, the orchestra and children.

There are two different versions of the music video: In the first version, the words “In loving memory of Melanie Thornton” are missing at the end; instead, the previous position is shown in full (a swivel to the ceiling). In the second version, this swing is omitted in favor of the lettering.

Samples and covers

In 2004 a Christmas song by the singer Tamee Harrison was released , which is called A Beautiful Time . It is a completely independent song, written and composed by Tamee Harrison, which, like Wonderful Dream (Holidays are Coming), was written “around the advertising slogan” “Always the real thing”. It reached number two in Austria and number 39 in Switzerland . The song was also used as a successor to many Coca-Cola advertising campaigns in Europe.

In 2006 the Polish singer Ania Szarmach recorded Wonderful Dream (Holidays are Coming) under the title Radość Dzielenia ; it was used for the Coca-Cola Christmas campaign in Poland .

Charts

Since its release on November 26, 2001, Wonderful Dream has returned to the single charts in Germany and Austria every year at Christmas time. It is always placed there for a few weeks and sometimes reaches ranks in the top 20. In Switzerland, there have not been such great successes. In 2004, 2005 and 2006 it didn't even make it into the charts, in the other years the stay was mostly limited to a few weeks.

Due to the annual return to the hit parades, a considerable number of placed weeks has now come together in Germany and Austria. In Germany, Wonderful Dream now has the third most chart weeks ever. In Austria it is ranked 10th in the all-time best list.
