Wonderland (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wonderland is a text adventure game developed by Magnetic Scrolls and published by Virgin Games in 1990 .

action

Wonderland is based on the children's book Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll . The player takes on the role of Alice, who follows a white, talking rabbit into its den and from there arrives in a strange world full of strange, talking creatures. No elements from the sequel Alice Behind the Looking Glass are used.

Game principle and technology

With this game, Magnetic Scrolls introduced a new control system called Magnetic Windows . The player's inventory, map, graphics etc. are all displayed in separate windows and can be moved and scaled as required. It is possible to move objects back and forth between the windows using drag and drop , for example to manage the inventory; there are also context menus for individual objects. As a third control variant , the interface also has the option of entering commands via a drop-down list instead of having to type them in manually, as was the case with other text adventures to date. The developers wanted to simplify accessibility and give the game an additional incentive.

Another special feature is that you can interact with almost all possible objects and receive corresponding feedback from the game, since the developers paid special attention to ensuring that the player never gets to a point where he has to read that a Idea and possibility were not considered.

Production notes

Development began in 1987, when David Bishop presented the first drafts to the company's founder, Anita Sinclair. Bishop then became a project developer. In retrospect, Rob Steggles, a former employee of Magnetic Scrolls, suggested in an essay that Wonderland was the main cause of the financial ruin at Magnetic Scrolls, because too many people were working on the project and the sales figures were far below expectations .
