Norwegian cartographers mapped it using aerial photographs taken during the Lars Christensen Expedition in 1936/37 . A team from the Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions visited them in 1962 and made the designation. It is named after Barry D. Woodberry, ionospheric physicist at Mawson Station and a member of this team.
