Kitsutsuki Tantei-dokoro ( Japanese 啄木鳥 探 偵 處 ) is a Japanese crime novel by Kei Ii from 1999. In 2020, an adaptation as an anime television series came out, which was published internationally as Woodpecker Detective's Office .
content
The novel is set in 1909 and tells fictional stories from the life of the Japanese poet Ishikawa Takuboku and his best friend, the linguist Kindaichi Kyōsuke . Both are part of a poetry circle in Tokyo during the Meiji period . Ishikawa leads a carefree, easy life, mostly with money borrowed from his friends - especially from Kyōsuke. If he earns money himself, it is with occasional work for a newspaper or his poetry. Ishikawa accepts investigative assignments in order to generate additional income. In solving the cases he is usually supported by Kyōsuke. He sends the money he earns to his family in the country or spends it quickly himself, so that he again has to rely on the generosity of others.
Kyōsuke has to suffer from his friendship with Ishikawa again and again because he notices how he is being exploited. Nevertheless, he cannot part with his friend, whom he values for his lively manner and his poetry. Finally, he stands by Ishikawa when he becomes seriously ill and slowly weakened until he dies of tuberculosis . Ishikawa also followed a series of murders through which his investigations brought him to the end. Only he recognized the connection between the cases. Not long before his death, Ishikawa is finally able to track down the perpetrator.
