World Association of Newspapers

The World Association of Newspapers (WAN), founded in 1948, saw itself as the global umbrella organization of 72 national newspaper associations. She also had numerous board members of newspapers in over 100 countries and several news agencies as members. In 2009 there was a merger with IFRA under the name WAN-IFRA .

The WAN described its goals as

  • Defending the freedom of the press and the economic independence of newspapers
  • To help develop the newspaper industry by promoting communication between newspapers around the world
  • Promotion of cooperation between the member organizations

WAN was based in Paris and has presented the Golden Pen of Freedom Award annually since 1961 .
