The WAN-IFRA ( English World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers ), the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers . WAN-IFRA is a non-profit association registered in the commercial register within the meaning of Article 60 ff. Of the Swiss Civil Code . The association has as a non-governmental organization consultative status at the United Nations , the UNESCO and the Euro Council . WAN-IFRA represents the interests of 79 national newspaper associations from around the world and over 3,000 companies from more than 120 countries, which together represent more than 15,000 newspapers and 18,000 news websites.

history

In 1948 survivors of the French and Dutch underground press founded the international association of newspaper editors FIEJ ( French Fédération Internationale des Editeurs de Journaux) based in Paris , France , in order to fight for the survival of a worldwide, free press . It was later renamed WAN (World Association of Newspapers), the world association of newspapers.

1961 founded the in train , Switzerland seated INCA (English International Newspaper Color Association) Belgian, German and British publishers, with the support of FIEJ, an organization should support the newspapers that the increased color printing in newspaper production. The headquarters was located in 1966 in Darmstadt . In 1971, as a result of the collaboration with the FIEJ, the INCA became the INCA FIEJ Research Association , the research and service organization for the newspaper industry. It existed as a separate organization alongside the FIEJ. The name was changed to IFRA (English acronym for "INCA FIEJ Research Association") in 2000.

In 2009, after more than five years of discussions, the merger of the two international trade associations WAN and IFRA resulted in today's WAN-IFRA with headquarters in Paris, France and Darmstadt, as well as several international branches . Of these, in 2013, after previous closings, those in Singapore , Singapore and Chennai , India remained. Additional corporations were also temporarily maintained at the German location .

In 2014, as part of a restructuring process, the German headquarters were relocated to Frankfurt am Main . In the course of this, the property in Darmstadt was sold and the workforce there was halved. During this phase, the function of CFO , the third full-time member of the executive board with signing authority, was also dropped . The names WAN-IFRA CH and WAN-IFRA FR are used to distinguish between the Frankfurt am Main and Paris headquarters.

WAN-IFRA is one of national associations of representatives and decision-makers from media companies occupied board controlled. Some of the board members form the Executive Committee , which has a central management function and is headed by the President .

The board receives support and advice from the Advisory Council, which represents the supplier industry, as well as several technical, regional and international committees of the members .

The full-time management is formed by a management headed by the CEO .

Events

In addition to several international conferences , the association also organizes the IFRA World Publishing Expo and DCX Digital Content Expo trade fairs as well as the World Newspaper Congress . The expos take place annually in autumn in Berlin (formerly at changing international locations). The congress is held together with the World Editors Forum and the World Advertising Forum every year before the start of summer at different international locations.
