(a)At the 1981 World Games, the British athletes competed for their respective states of England , Wales , Scotland or Northern Ireland, depending on the sports association . The International Association for World Games - similar to the IOC - combines all results of the four states under the United Kingdom . This peculiarity did not occur with the British karate fighters, as they already competed under the national flag of the United Kingdom at their sports association - World Karate Federation (WKF). Roller sports enthusiasts (under the Fédération Internationale de Roller Sports (FIRS)) and water skiers (under the International Waterski & Wakeboard Federation (IWWF)) were also not affected by the special feature.
(b)The mixed badminton competition was won by two athletes from different nations - Thomas Kihlström for Sweden and Gillian Gilks for England. Both nations are therefore each added a gold medal.
(c)Two bronze medals were awarded in all badminton, kumite and taekwondo competitions. No bronze medals were awarded in eight of the nine powerlifting competitions or in the synchronized competition for women and women singles in trampoline gymnastics. No silver medal was awarded in a powerlifting competition. In the women's individual trampoline gymnastics competition, Christine Tough won the silver medal for Canada and Barbara Letho for the United States, a bronze medal was not awarded.
