The drivers always competed in threes for one country. At the beginning there were 21 preliminary runs, so each nation with two drivers competed against each of the other nation once. The winner got three points for his country, the second two points and the third place one point. After the preliminary round, the team that scored the most points qualified for the final. The second and third placed determined the second finalist in a decisive race.
