The initiator of the project is Albert Torres, a well-known representative of the salsa dance scene, who owns the film production company Albert Torres Productions u. a. hosts the annual West Coast Salsa Congress in Los Angeles .

(As of May 2006)

From an organizational point of view, Salsa was a completely untouched field until 2005. In the 1990s, numerous so-called “salsa congresses” appeared around the world, which are commercially oriented and offer workshops and dance performances over several days. So far, however, there has been no club or association structure, as is common in other dances (see e.g. German Dance Sports Association ).

In the past, many salsa dance tournaments were held that gave themselves officiality. Since there are no guidelines or competence tests without an umbrella organization, in principle anyone can call a national, international or even world championship. For example, the German Amateur Tournament Office organizes German amateur salsa championships without the involvement of well-known experts in salsa; The tournament office is a specialist department of the professional association of German dance teachers, but very few active German salsa dance teachers are members of this association, not to mention foreign ones.

There is a difference here to the World Salsa Championships: Albert Torres is seen by many as an expert on salsa who has enough specialist knowledge and organizational talent to make the tournament a “real” world championship. Torres' authority was apparently (or apparently?) Recognized in 2006 when qualification rounds for the world championship taking place at the end of the year were proclaimed at salsa congresses around the world (e.g. in Germany at the International Salsafestival in Hamburg).

Salsa is still not considered a dance sport and has no organizations. There are no dance classes at the World Salsa Championships, no catalog of figures and no fixed guidelines for the judges. Obviously the Los Angeles style predominates; H. Hip movements are rarely danced in contrast to Cuban style.
