The Worsley Alumina Refinery is located near the historic woodworking settlement of Worsley, approximately 15 km northwest of Collie in Western Australia , Australia . This refinery, which employs around 1,800 people, is a joint venture between South32 (86%), Japan Alumina Associates (Australia) (10%) and Sojitz (4%). South32 is an offshoot of BHP Billiton , which was split off on May 25, 2015.

In it, pure aluminum oxide is obtained from bauxite using the Bayer process .

history

In the early 1960s, local business people started a company that explored and mined the bauxite deposits near Boddington in the Darling Range . In the 1980s, construction of the Boddington bauxite mine and refinery began. The first alumina was produced in April 1984 and as of May 2000 the refinery produced 3.1 million tons of alumina. The bauxite is supplied from the Boddington bauxite mine. The aluminum oxide produced by the refinery is then transported by rail to the port of Bunbury , where it is loaded onto ships.

From 2008 to 2012 the capacity was increased to 4.6 million tons per year.
