The city is located near the confluence of the Harris River and the Collie River , in the middle of dense Jerryhl forest and in Western Australia's only coal-mining area. Coal was discovered in the area by the shepherd George Marsh in the early 1880s . The coal mines were built in the late 1890s and in 1897 the city was surveyed and mapped.
Collie was once considered a "dirty mining town, " but on April 8, 2006, the town won the Australian Tidy Towns competition. Collie was named the Cleanest City in the State and the Northern Territory for its commitment to recycling, waste handling, city beautification, and community projects.

In 2007 the coal turbines of this power plant were closed because of their carbon dioxide emissions and gas turbines were installed, which greatly reduced these emissions. and when the gas crisis in Western Australia occurred on June 3, 2008 due to the breakage of a natural gas pipeline and the destruction of the facilities on Varanus Island, this power plant had to be taken off the grid by June 23, 2008.
Another coal-fired power station near Collie is the Collie Power Station, 10 km away, with a capacity of 340 MW, which opened in 1999 and is now operated by the utility Verveenergie .
