Landshut Youth Book Prize

The Landshut Youth Book Prize (LJBP), nicknamed Auserlesen, is a reading promotion project of the Landshut City Library financed by municipal funds . It has been awarded annually since 2009. It was founded at the end of 2008 by the LJBP working group of the Landshut youth reading club, which organizes and designs the award. Landshut-based author Mirjam Pressler is the patron of the award. The Landshut youth reading club annually nominates the 15 best new youth books of the previous year. The jury, made up of school classes from various schools and young library customers from Landshut, selects three winners from these titles.

Youth Reading Club Landshut

Landshut has had a reading club run by the Landshut City Library since 1991. In 1999 it was divided into a children's and a youth reading club. From 2003 to 2008 the youth reading club Landshut was one of six groups nationwide that formed the youth jury for the German Youth Literature Prize . The librarian Georg Braun, who was a member of the jury of the German Youth Literature Prize for several years, was the leader or teamer of the youth reading club until 2017.

Emergence

The Youth Literature Prize was suggested by Georg Braun together with the author and translator Mirjam Pressler in order to be able to carry out such a prize in cooperation with Landshut schools as a reading promotion project. When the youth jury of the German Youth Literature Prize was selected for the following year in 2008, the Landshut Youth Reading Club was no longer allowed to participate due to its longstanding participation. As a result, Georg Braun and five reading club members founded the Landshut Youth Book Prize (AG LJBP) working group at the end of 2008. This first created a detailed concept and had it approved by the management of the Landshut city library. The Landshut schools were then contacted so that the reading promotion project could start in spring 2009.

In addition to the leader Georg Braun, the LJPB working group consists of young people from the Landshut youth reading club. According to the motto “By young people for young people”, Mr. Braun only takes on the coordination of the meetings and maintains contact with the publishers and school management, while the young people themselves carry out the organization, design, presentation of books, advertising, etc. The working group's meetings take place irregularly depending on the organizational needs, i. H. especially in spring at the start of the campaign and in summer to evaluate the winners and to plan the final event - the award ceremony - in the Salzstadel Landshut.

Concept and implementation

The reading club meets in November and selects what it believes is the 15 best new youth books of the year. There are no set standards and criteria for the selection, only the subjective opinion of the members. A nomination requires at least 2-3 votes, although exceptions are possible. The nomination list drawn up, entitled “Auserlesen”, will be presented at the beginning of December in the Landshut bookstore Pustet and then displayed there and in the Landshut libraries for customers and readers. The titles form the preselection for the Landshut Youth Book Prize to be awarded in the following year.

Evaluation sheet 2013

The jury, which selects the best three books from these 15 titles, consists of school classes from 7th to 10th grade from different schools in Landshut. When selecting the participating school classes, attention is also paid to an even distribution across the corresponding grades. The members of the AG LJBP (Working Group Landshut Youth Book Prize) present the project and the nominations to the students in a lesson. Then evaluation sheets and two copies of each of the nominated books are distributed in so-called book boxes. These boxes stay in the classes for three to four weeks. With the support of the teachers, presentations or discussion groups are sometimes incorporated into the lessons. After submitting the completed evaluation sheets, which have been on display in the city's libraries and at Bücher Pustet since 2011, the working group members evaluate them and start planning the award ceremony and creating advertising materials and invitations.

The poster that advertises the award ceremony is designed and painted by a young person. The LJBT AG and the Landshut City Library are responsible for the design of the poster. It is posted in libraries, schools and public institutions from late June to early July. The motif is also used to create handouts with information about the price on the back as well as invitation cards for the participating students for the final event. If these cards are thrown into the raffle pot at the closing event, the student takes part in a gift raffle at the end of the event.

The deadline for submitting the completed evaluation forms is the end of July. At the beginning of August, members of the AG LJBP evaluate this and start planning the award ceremony.

The award ceremony takes place every year at the beginning of October in the Salzstadel event room in Landshut. Well-known authors and representatives of the city administration are regularly invited. The event will be moderated by working group members and will be accompanied musically by other young people. As part of the award ceremony, the three best books will be presented in random order by AG members and then the three winners will be announced with a laudation. There will also be a raffle among all students who participated in the jury.

The main aim of the Landshut Youth Book Prize is to promote reading. Schoolchildren should have access to books independently of what they are reading at school, receive book recommendations from their peers and thus be introduced to previously unknown literature. In addition, the youth book award serves to promote cooperation between schools and the library and to promote (youth) literature with effective publicity as well as a target group-oriented inventory of public libraries.

2009

In the first year there were two boxes of books, each with two copies of the 15 nominated titles (Auserlesen list 2008), which were available to the classes for four weeks from March to July. The jury was made up of eight classes from six Landshut schools (from Hauptschule to Gymnasium). Approx. 200 evaluation sheets were submitted, which corresponds to one evaluation sheet per student on average. Among the contributors to the award ceremony on October 2, 2009 were the youth book author and poetry slam performer Jaromir Konecny with his contribution “Who is the writer here, damn it?” And the patron of the literature prize Mirjam Pressler , who gave the most active class a special reading . The awards were given to authors and publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

2010

Due to the positive response and numerous inquiries from teachers who wanted to participate with their class as a jury, the AG LJBP received another box of books for their project. This time the jury consisted of twelve classes from seven schools, which could submit their assessments between March and July. For the first time, it was also possible to take part in the assessment regardless of whether or not they belonged to a class. Approx. 400 evaluation sheets were submitted. Jaromir Konecny ​​was invited to the award ceremony on October 1, 2010 and this time he read from his book “Doktorspiele”. In addition, the German poetry slammer Heiner Lange entertained the audience. Ricarda Burger provided the musical background for the event on the grand piano. The patron gave a book package to the hardest working class.

2011

There was also an increase in the number of participants in the third year: 17 classes from eight schools took part. A total of 566 completed evaluation forms were submitted. The award ceremony took place on October 7, 2011. The second prize was handed over to Uwe-Michael Gutzschhahn , translator of Rachel Ward's “Numbers”, while the first prize went to Script5 press spokesman Dominik Nuese. Youth book author and poetry slammer Jaromir Konecny ​​read out stories from prefabricated buildings and the scene of the spin-bottle from his novel "Krumme Gurken". Book prizes and vouchers were also raffled among all jury participants. Mirjam Pressler gave a reading to the hardest working class.

2012

The fourth Landshut Youth Book Prize was awarded on October 5, 2012, again as part of an evening event in the Salzstadel. As in previous years, the award winners were selected from a total of 424 evaluation forms. For the first time a title (Rachel Ward: Numbers - Den Tod vor Augen ) was awarded again.

The author of the book with the best rating (on average), his / her translator and his / her publisher will receive a large cake in book form, which was previously presented by the reading club at the Frankfurt book fairs. In addition, they - and also the second and third place winners - receive certificates. The class that completed the most evaluation sheets will be rewarded. The type of reward remains a surprise until the award ceremony. In 2009 Mirjam Pressler gave the most eager school class a personal reading. In 2010 the same class won again and received a book package from the author for young people. In 2011 and 2012 there were class readings with M. Pressler for the most active class. Small gifts will be raffled among all jury participants present. There are mostly vouchers and book prizes sponsored by publishers and various companies. The more evaluation sheets a student has submitted, the higher his / her chance of winning.

Effect and public

The aim of the project from the beginning was to offer a wide range of possible effects for the individual participants as well as for the participating school classes. The effect should initially be local, but then also regional and supra-regional.

Internal effects

The reading club members, especially the participants in the working group, were able to develop or reinforce numerous skills in the planning and implementation of the project. Depending on their individual inclination, they soon decided on special areas of responsibility, e.g. B. scheduling, press work, graphic design of advertising materials (all posters were designed by young people themselves), moderation, internet presence, event planning, etc. Through contacts with publishers, the media and experts, communication and expression skills were strengthened. The working group members also developed team spirit and a willingness to take responsibility, flexibility (for example in the event of unexpected problems) and creativity. Last but not least, the knowledge of literature and literature mediation was increased. In recognition of the skills they have acquired, at the end of a project year the members of the working group received the “Competence Certificate Culture” from the project manager, a certificate issued by the Federal Association for Cultural Youth Education (BKJ) on the strengths individually acquired in a project.

The effects of participating in the project on the part of students and teachers were evident from numerous feedbacks. Teachers shared the unexpected enthusiasm of many students for reading. Although an equal consideration of all interests and age groups in the selection of books appeared difficult at first, most students and teachers found the selection appropriate and largely age-appropriate. From the second year of the project, the reading club had already paid attention to a heterogeneous readership when nominating the title. The structure of the evaluation sheet (short, concise statements on content, language, structure and presentation) as well as the clear point system with final evaluation (0–12 points) increased the reading pleasure for many students, as no lengthy summaries or interpretations were required. Most of the teachers who were there in the first year wanted to do it again in the following year. Some teachers confirmed that, in addition to the effect of promoting reading, the successful selection of books had also increased the literary-aesthetic experience potential of many students. It was also found that the inclusion of current and literarily “upscale” youth novels had an impact on both methodological didactics and youth literary expertise.

External effects

For the city library and its branches (including several school libraries), the implementation of the “Auserlesen” award meant a further alignment of the holdings towards a target group-relevant range of books, as the titles were acquired several times. Some publishers also made additional review copies available for the project. The project and pricing were presented in detail on the city library website. In addition, the action was from many sides, u. a. perceived by school principals, local media, politicians and people from the city administration as an innovative project of the library with a focus on educational and youth work. The city promised a subsidy for additional book purchases and the organization of the final event.

Public reception

The Landshut Youth Book Prize also attracted attention outside of Landshut. Reading promotion institutions such as the Working Group for Young People's Literature (AKJ) and the Reading Foundation , but also the specialist youth literary press (magazines “Eselsohr”, “Bulletin Jugend & Literatur”) reported on the Landshut youth reading club and “its” prize. In addition, some project-independent discussion and voting groups such as “Auserlesen - Landshuter Jugendbuchpreis” at LovelyBooks , the forums “Reading Forum Bavaria”, “German Education Server”, “www.lesen-in-deutschland.de”, “ÖBiB-online”, “www .schulmediothek.de "and others. The project was presented as part of regional teacher training courses at the reading club symposium at the Leipzig Book Fair. Recently, publishers have also advertised the Landshut Youth Book Prize on the covers of the nominated books.
