The Boddington bauxite mine is located in the Darling Range in Western Australia and was discovered in 1957. Bauxite has been mined there in open-cast mining since the late 1970s . The volume of Boddington bauxite mined on Mount Saddleback is approximately 12 million tons annually. The mining takes place approximately 12 kilometers from the village of Boddington . It is operated in a joint venture between BHP Billiton (86%), Japan Alumina Associates (Australia) (10%), Sojitz Alumina (4%).

In 2010 this mine was one of the five largest bauxite mines in Australia .

geology

The bauxite ore overlays the 135 to 128 million year old Bunbury basalt , which was formed during volcanism in southern Western Australia. Seismic surveys under the continent between Perth and Bunbury show that basalt flowed in a valley up to the boundary of the continental shelf . The bauxite deposit is estimated at 400 million tons.

Dismantling

Boddington bauxite occurs mainly in a 2 to 12 meter thick hard rock layer and is shattered by drilling with subsequent blasting. It is picked up with wheel loaders and loaded onto trucks. The extracted rock is formatted in two stages, in a first stage less than 18 cm and in the second stage less than 3 cm, before the bauxite is transported on a 51-kilometer conveyor belt to Worsley for further processing , where it is transported to the Worsley Alumina refinery to be processed into alumina .

After the bauxite has been extracted, the area will be recultivated with 90 different plants, according to the information provided by the operator.
