Worth Ryder

Worth Ryder (born November 10, 1884 in Kirkwood , Illinois , USA , † February 17, 1960 in Berkeley , California ) was an American artist , curator and art professor.

life and work

Ryder came to Berkeley as a child and graduated from Berkeley High School in 1903. He then studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1906 to 1908 and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and at the University of Munich . In 1911 Ryder went back to California and taught at the California College of the Arts until 1918. From 1921 to 1927 Ryder continued his studies in Germany, France and Italy. One of his teachers was Hans Hofmann . After his return, Ryder taught at the University of California, Berkeley from 1927 until his retirement in 1955. It is to his credit that he brought Hans Hofmann to the USA in 1930 and that Hofmann in 1930 and 1931 at the University of California, Berkeley taught.

The Worth Ryder Gallery at the University of California, Berkeley is named after Ryder. In 1963, three years after Ryder's death, Hans Hofmann donated 45 paintings to the University of California, Berkeley in honor of Ryder.
