The Worth School is a private Roman Catholic boarding school - and day school for students aged 11 to 18 years. It is located near Turners Hill, Crawley in West Sussex , England . It is located on the grounds of Worth Abbey, a Benedictine monastery. In 2005, 305 boarders and 150 day pupils attended the school.

history

The school was founded in 1933 on the country estate of Lord Cowdray. That year the property originally known as Paddockhurst was bought by the Benedictine monks of Downside Abbey in Somerset. They founded a preschool and elementary school for boys between the ages of 7 and 13. During the Second World War the school was relocated to Downside.

In 1957 Worth Priory became independent, eight years later it was renamed Worth Abbey. In 1959, Worth School was established for boys between the ages of 13 and 18. The activities of the primary school, on the other hand, were scaled back year after year and finally in 1965 it was converted into a junior house for boys between 10 and 13 years of age.

In 2005 the school was fined £ 10,000 for violating competition law by negotiating tuition fees with fifty other leading private schools . During the process, all schools involved decided to make a voluntary donation totaling three million pounds, which went to the benefit of the students who had attended the schools during the period of the fee agreement.

Since September 2008 girls have been taught at school for the first time. The co-education will be expanded in the coming years.

The eight houses divide the students according to age and / or gender.

  • Farwell (Years 9 to 13) - Senior Day House

degrees

At the Worth School, both A-Level and the International Baccalaureate (IB) are offered as degrees from the Sixth Form . Traditionally, slightly more students per year opt for A-Level than for the IB, which is favored mainly by foreign students. In May 2008, 15 German students took IB. The school is getting similarly popular from Southeast Asia and Spain as well as from Spanish-speaking regions of South America. In contrast to most German students, who prefer to switch to the sixth form after the tenth grade from Germany, students from other nations tend to come to Worth before the sixth form - mostly from year 7 or 9.

Educational offer

Worth School is in the line of traditional English elite boarding schools , which, in addition to academic performance, focus on a socially appropriate education of the students. This is an attempt to promote social skills. This is done through offers such as participation in the acquisition of the Duke of Edinborough Award or charitable activities. Artistically gifted pupils are promoted in the school's own Arts Department and the Performing Arts Center in the disciplines of modern art or theater and music. In addition to a school orchestra and its own school choir, which performs internationally in the major Sunday masses and at the end of the school year (most recently in summer 2007 in Koblenz), students can also receive individual instrumental and vocal training on request.

The sports offer is divided into the trimesters according to the seasons. Rugby is the main sport in the first trimester , while preparations for the football season are ongoing in the second trimester. In the second trimester, football will be the main sport, rugby will continue to be offered for training. The third trimester offers cricket , tennis, and athletics . Participation in the sports offer is compulsory.

Students are also required to attend church services, devotions, and prayer times during the week and at weekends. These are mostly run by a monk from Worth Abbey.

Own students are appointed prefects by teachers who take responsibility for an area of the school. This creates a hierarchy in the student body that enables limited self-administration.
