Wouter Cornelis Braat (born February 4, 1903 in Delft , † March 28, 2000 in Oegstgeest ) was a Dutch archaeologist .

After attending school in Delft and Apeldoorn , he studied history and art history at the University of Leiden from 1923 , under professors Johan Huizinga , Herman Theodoor Colenbrander and Martin , among others . From 1928 he was a research associate at the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden under the direction of Jan Hendrik Holwerda . At the same time he wrote his dissertation De Archeologie van de Wieringermeer , with which he received his doctorate in June 1932 at the University of Leiden. Due to his special focus on the simple medieval finds, this work became a pioneering study of medieval archeology, to which he would later make many valuable contributions. After completing his doctorate, he studied another semester in Freiburg and Berlin. At the Leiden Museum he became a curator in the Classical and Dutch sections. In 1968 he retired.

In the Oud Leiden Association he was a member and secretary from 1931, a board member from 1936, vice-president from 1945 and president from 1960. He was also President of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Oudheidkundige Bond (1963–1965 and 1968–1971). In 1964 he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau . From 1965 to 1969 he was chairman of the Commissie voor Volkskunde (Folklore Commission) founded in 1950 . In 1966 Braat resigned from the presidency of the Oud Leiden Association and was appointed honorary chairman. Even after his retirement he remained connected to classical studies and became the critical spirit in the conflict between the interests of builders and shopkeepers on the one hand and the interests of monument protection on the other. His annual speeches at the general meetings of the KNOB ( Koninklijke Nederlandse Oudheidkundige Bond ) reflected Braats' ideas in the field of cultural history and monument protection.
