Wouter Jacobus Hanegraaff (born April 10, 1961 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch cultural historian and religious scholar . He teaches at the University of Amsterdam and is one of the leading esoteric researchers.

Life

Hanegraaff studied classical guitar at the Zwolle Conservatory from 1982 to 1987 and cultural history at the University of Utrecht from 1986 to 1990 . In 1995 he received his doctorate in Utrecht on New Age Religion and Western Culture: Esotericism in the Mirror of Secular Thought . In 1999 he was appointed to the chair for the “History of Hermetic Philosophy and Allied Currents” at the University of Amsterdam. From 2002 to 2006 he was President of the Dutch Society for Religious Studies, from 2005 to 2013 he was President of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (in German, for example: European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism ). In 2006 Hanegraaff was accepted into the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences .
